Television channel

FX (short for Fox Extended) is an American pay television channel owned by FX Networks, LLC, a subsidiary of the Disney Entertainment business segment and division of The Walt Disney Company. It is based at the Fox Studios lot in Century City, California. FX was originally launched by News Corporation on June 1, 1994,[2] and later became one of the properties that was included in the acquisition of 21st Century Fox by Disney in 2019. The network’s original programming aspires to the standards of premium cable channels in regard to mature themes and content, high-quality writing, directing and acting. Sister channels FXM and FXX were launched in 1994 and 2013, respectively. FX also carries reruns of theatrical films and terrestrial-network sitcoms. Advertising-free content was available through the FX+ premium subscription service until it was shut down on August 21, 2019.

As of September 2018, FX is available to approximately 89.2 million television households ( 96.7 % of households with cable ) in the United States. [ 3 ] In addition to the flagship U.S. network, the ” FX ” name is licensed to a number of related pay television channels in various countries around the world .

History

1994 – 1997 : ” TV Made Fresh Daily “

FX, originally stylized as “fX”, launched on June 1, 1994. Broadcasting from a large “apartment” in Manhattan’s Flatiron District, fX was one of the first forays into large-scale interactive television. The channel centered on original programming, which was broadcast live every day from the “fX Apartment”, and rebroadcasts of classic television shows from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, such as Batman, Wonder Woman, Eight Is Enough, Nanny and the Professor and The Green Hornet.[2] fX had two taglines during this period: “TV Made Fresh Daily” and “The World’s First Living Television Network”.[4] The “f” in the channel’s name and logo was rendered in lower-case to portray a type of relaxed friendliness; the stylized “X” represented the channel’s roots: the crossing searchlights of the 20th Century Fox logo.

The live shows were each mostly focused on one broad topic. Shows included Personal fX (collectibles and antiques), The Pet Department (pets), Under Scrutiny with Jane Wallace (news) and Sound fX (music). The channel’s flagship show, Breakfast Time, hosted by Laurie Hibberd and Tom Bergeron and inspired by the British morning show The Big Breakfast, was formatted like an informal magazine show. Breakfast Time and Personal fX would regularly feature the channel’s “roving reporters” – which included Suzanne Whang, John Burke and Phil Keoghan – visiting unique places around the United States live via satellite. Other notable fX personalities included Karyn Bryant and Orlando Jones, who were panelists on Sound fX.

The channel prided itself on its interactivity with viewers. fX, in 1994, was an early adopter of the internet, embracing e-mail and the World Wide Web as methods of feedback. Most of the shows would feature instant responses to e-mailed questions, and one show, Backchat (hosted by Jeff Probst), was exclusively devoted to responding to viewer mail, whether sent through e-mail or traditional postal mail. Select viewers were allowed to spend a day at the “apartment” and take part in all of the channel’s shows. Inside the channel’s syndicated programming blocks, channel hosts would frequently appear during commercial breaks to read news headlines, respond to e-mails from viewers about the episode that was airing, or to promote upcoming programming.

In 1995, Liberty Media purchased a 50 % stake in the network as part of their alliance with News Corporation to form Fox Sports Net ; as a part of this plan, fX became the national home for Fox Sports programming over the next few years. [ 5 ]The first incarnation of fX was not available on Time Warner Cable, one of the major cable systems in Thành Phố New York City, where its programming originated. TWC would not carry the channel until September 2001. [ 6 ]

The live shows gradually disappeared one by one until only Personal fX remained. Breakfast Time was moved to the Fox network and renamed Fox After Breakfast in mid-1996. It underwent several format changes, but never found a substantial audience and was canceled less than a year later. By the time that all live programming (with the exception of Personal fX) was dropped, the channel focused entirely on its classic television shows until its relaunch in mid-1997. Personal fX remained on the refocused FX until May 1, 1998. FX vacated the “apartment” in the summer of 1998 and the channel’s operations were streamlined with the other Fox-owned subscription channels.

1997 – 2001 : ” Fox Gone Cable “

In early 1997, fX was relaunched as “FX: Fox Gone Cable”,[7] refocusing the channel’s target audience towards men aged 18 to 49. During the first few years after its relaunch, FX was known for little else than airing reruns of such Fox shows as The X-Files and Married… with Children, as well as 20th Century Fox-produced shows such as M*A*S*H and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The channel also added Major League Baseball games to its lineup at that time (at one point sharing rights with then-sister network Fox Family), and eventually expanded its sports programming to include NASCAR races in 2001.

In the summer of 1998, FX debuted three original series: Bobcat’s Big Ass Show, Instant Comedy with the Groundlings and Penn & Teller’s Sin City Spectacular. All three series were cancelled the following year. Soon after its relaunch, the “Fox Gone Cable” tagline was dropped. By 1999, new original TV shows were added with the debut of shows such as Son of the Beach (a Baywatch parody that starred Timothy Stack and was executive produced by Howard Stern) and The X Show (a male-oriented late night panel talk show).[8] The channel also acquired the pay-TV syndication rights to reruns of series such as Ally McBeal, NYPD Blue and The Practice for then-record high prices then unseen in the pay-TV industry despite all three 20th Century Fox Television series being under common ownership; when these shows expensively fumbled in primetime, FX predominantly ran movies in its more high-profile time periods, though with the move of premiere film rights from free-to-air broadcast networks to basic cable channels, FX unexpectedly would end up a benefactor of this change.

2002 – 2007 : emergence in original programming

Beginning in 2002, the channel emerged as a major force in original pay-TV programming, gaining both acclaim and notoriety for edgy dramas. That year, FX debuted the police drama The Shield, which became a breakout hit. This trend continued the following year with Nip/Tuck, a drama about two plastic surgeons, and the Denis Leary-helmed Rescue Me, about the lives of a crew of firemen from the New York City Fire Department post-9/11. Both shows were lauded by critics, and achieved equal success with viewers. Rescue Me was one of the few television series to be given an order for an additional season prior to the broadcast of its most recent season: in June 2009 FX renewed the show for an 18-episode sixth season, although the fifth season had not premiered at the time.[9]

Unlike many broadcast networks, FX has chosen to take risks with its programming and push the envelope of what can be shown on television ; as a result, most ( though not all ) of the channel’s original series are rated TV-MA, often for strong profanity, sexual content, and / or violence. Family organizations such as the Parents Television Council and American Family Association, have asked advertisers to boycott these shows due to their graphic content. [ 10 ] [ 11 ] Despite this, FX’s original programming output, outside of a few shows, has been critically acclaimed for their strong storylines and characters .

Capitalizing on the success of the hit documentary Super Size Me, filmmaker Morgan Spurlock launched a new series, 30 Days, which debuted on FX in June 2005. The series place its subjects in situations uncomfortable to them for 30 days, such as making millionaires work for minimum wage, and having Christians live in a Muslim community.

In the summer of 2005, FX debuted two new comedy series, Starved, about the daily lives of four friends with eating disorders who live in New York City; and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, about the usually very politically incorrect comic misadventures of four people who own a bar in the titular city. Both of these shows feature frank sexual dialogue and strong language, and were pitched as “The Dark Side of Comedy”. Starved was derided by groups that sought to publicize eating disorders and was cancelled after its first season due to low ratings. Conversely, Sunny quickly became a critical darling, consistently achieved high viewership, and was picked up for a second season within days of its first-season finale. The second season added veteran actor Danny DeVito to the cast, and the show, still airing as of 2023, is the longest-running live-action sitcom in history.

In 2006, FX debuted two new series, the reality series Black. White. and the drama Thief; neither series was picked up for a second season. During 2007, FX introduced three new dramas: Dirt, starring Courteney Cox; The Riches, starring Eddie Izzard and Minnie Driver; and Damages, starring Glenn Close, Ted Danson and Rose Byrne. All three performed well in the ratings and were renewed for second seasons. By 2008, FX was available in 90.6 million homes in the U.S.

2008 – 2018 : subsequent times

FX logo used from 2008 to 2013
In 2008, the channel launched a new branding chiến dịch built around the theme ” There Is No Box. ” It alluded to the phrase ” thinking outside the box ” and referred to how the channel’s programming goes beyond ” the box ” concept. In addition, this was a pun related to the channel’s creating original shows to compete against premium channels such as HBO. The channel’s logo was updated on December 18, 2007, retaining only the FX wordmark while removing the klieg light logo box that had been placed to its left since the 1997 rebrand. The new branding included an advertising chiến dịch featuring a post-game ad for the channel during Fox’s coverage of Super Bowl XLII. [ 12 ] The promo used the James Morrison tuy nhiên ” You Give Me Something “. [ 13 ]

During 2008, competition with other pay-TV channels increased. This was evident in the second season ratings for series Dirt and The Riches, whose ratings decreased significantly from their freshman seasons. During some weeks, viewership for both shows barely exceeded 1 million. Both shows were cancelled in 2008; acquired shows Dharma and Greg, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Married… with Children and Fear Factor were also removed from the schedule.[citation needed]

On September 3, 2008, FX debuted Sons of Anarchy, a drama series created by Kurt Sutter (who previously served as executive producer of The Shield) about a fictional outlaw motorcycle club devoted to protecting their sheltered California town from corporate developers and drug dealers; its September premiere coincided with that of The Shield‘s final season. Sons of Anarchy became a critical and commercial success, having aired for seven seasons as of 2014. In 2010, the series attracted an average of 4.9 million viewers per week, making it FX‘s highest rated series to date.[14] Other new shows that premiered in 2008 included the Kenny Hotz comedy Testees, which debuted in October 2008 and was cancelled after its first season.[citation needed] In August 2008, FX relaunched its website, adding streaming of full episodes of its original shows. In 2009, reruns of the former ABC sitcom Spin City were removed from the schedule (though it was restored early the following year).

In July 2009, FX ordered three new comedy pilots: Archer, an animated series featuring a spy agency, which premiered on January 14, 2010;[15] The League, with a group of friends who are part of a fantasy football league;[16] and Louie, a sitcom starring stand-up comedian and writer Louis C.K., which “blend[s] stand-up material with … ‘extended vignettes’ depicting moments from [the comedian’s] offstage experiences.”[17] The following year, FX debuted Wilfred, a comedy series starring Elijah Wood. It is based on the Australian series Wilfred.[18]

In March 2010, the channel debuted Justified, a drama series created by Graham Yost based on Elmore Leonard’s short story “Fire in the Hole” (which was the series’ original working title). It starred Timothy Olyphant as U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens – a tough, soft-spoken lawman with a rough side – and chronicles his cases and personal life, including unfinished business with an ex-wife and his aging father.[19] FX also picked up the crime comedy-drama Terriers, created by Ted Griffin, for its fall 2010 lineup; in 2011, the channel debuted the boxing drama Lights Out, about retired boxing champion Patrick “Lights” Leary who is considering a comeback, despite the serious risks it entails. Despite the critical acclaim that Terriers and Lights Out received, the two series were cancelled after their first seasons due to low viewership; For Terriers specifically, FX Networks president and General Manager John Landgraf would later admit in a 2016 interview with critic Alan Sepinwall that “I cannot think of a more painful moment of my career than the one when I defined Terriers as a failure by canceling it.”[20]

On October 1, 2010, parent company News Corporation (which spun off FX and the company’s other U.S.-based entertainment properties to 21st Century Fox in July 2013) pulled its channels from Dish Network due to a carriage dispute over retransmission consent revenue. FX returned to the satellite provider’s channel lineup on October 29, 2010, after Dish Network and News Corporation signed a long-term carriage agreement. On November 1, 2010, following a similar dispute, FX and its sister channels were restored by New York City-based cable provider Cablevision through a separate carriage agreement.[citation needed]

On October 14, 2011, FX announced it picked up the rights to develop a series based on Scar Tissue and Lords of the Sunset Strip, the autobiographies of the Red Hot Chili Peppers singer Anthony Kiedis and his father, Blackie Dammett. HBO had picked up the series, which was to be titled Spider & Son, a few years before but never completed the project. Entourage writer/producers Marc Abrams and Mike Benson were tapped as its showrunners and Kiedis was to be involved as a co-producer.[21] Dammett said in 2013 that the show has been “mothballed”, and he hopes interest will resume on the project once the Red Hot Chili Peppers wrapped up their world tour that year. As of 2014 there has been no mention from FX, Kiedis or Dammett on the status of the series.[22] On January 30, 2013, FX premiered the 1980s-set Cold War drama The Americans.

2019 – present : Disney subsidiary

On March 20, 2019, The Walt Disney Company acquired 21st Century Fox.[23] Consequently, FX Networks was integrated into the newly renamed Walt Disney Television unit.[24] In a September 2018 interview with Variety of the Disney-Fox deal, Landgraf said, “I think this is a necessary step. I have curiosity and a bit of anxiety about how it will work, but I’m really excited about it.[25]

On April 8, 2019, FX Networks had acquired off-network rights to Family Guy, starting with its sixteenth season and Bob’s Burgers, starting with its ninth season. Family Guy began airing on FXX on April 16, 2019, while Bob’s Burgers made its debut on September 24, 2019. FXX shares the rights to Family Guy with sister network Freeform. WarnerMedia’s Adult Swim and TBS held the rights to older seasons of both shows; WarnerMedia’s rights to Family Guy expired on September 18, 2021, at which point reruns are exclusive to FX Networks and Freeform, with the rights to Bob’s Burgers similarly coming under FX Networks’ full control in 2023.[26]

On May 14, 2019, Comcast relinquished its control in Hulu to Disney effective immediately. As a result, the streaming service became a division of Walt Disney Direct-to-Consumer & International with Comcast effectively becoming a silent partner.[27] In November 2019, it was announced that FX would produce series for Hulu under the “FX on Hulu” brand. Four series previously in development for the linear FX channel would now premiere on Hulu, including Devs, Mrs. America and A Teacher.[28] Furthermore, episodes aired on the linear FX cable network will be available on Hulu the next day.[29]

On June 11, 2019, Hulu and FX picked up show rights to Lionsgate films released in 2020 and 2021. [ 30 ]In December 2021, Disney renamed the ” FX on Hulu ” hub to simply ” FX ” as part of an effort to streamline and extend the brand’s use. In addition, Disney began to increase the prominence of FX branding as a label on its original programming, especially when carried on streaming platforms in international services such as Disney + ( Star ) and Star +. [ 31 ]

Programming

FX’s most popular original shows include Justified, Damages, Nip/Tuck, Rescue Me, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, The League, Sons of Anarchy, The Shield, The Strain, Archer, American Horror Story, Anger Management, The Americans, Better Things, Louie, You’re the Worst, Fargo, American Crime Story, Legion, Snowfall and Atlanta.

The channel also broadcasts theatrically released feature films from sister companies Walt Disney Pictures, Marvel Studios, and 20th Century Studios as well as other film studios such as Columbia Pictures, Sony Pictures Animation, Universal Pictures, Paramount Pictures, Lionsgate Films, Relativity Media, Village Roadshow Pictures, Warner Bros. Pictures, DreamWorks Pictures, and DreamWorks Animation which take up much of FX’s primetime and the majority of its weekend schedules. It airs repeats of network television sitcoms (such as Two and a Half Men and How I Met Your Mother). From the late 1990s to the mid-2000s, the acquired shows which FX broadcast consisted largely of series originally broadcast on Fox between the late 1980s and the 2000s (such as That ’70s Show, Married… with Children, and In Living Color).

Sports programming

FX has served as a supplemental sports outlet for its sister networks, first broadcasting Fox Sports – produced programming under News Corporation’s and 21 st Century Fox’s ownership, and ESPN – produced programming since the Disney acquisition of FX .After obtaining the spring broadcast rights to NASCAR, Fox Sports announced that FX would serve as its cable partner for the 2001 inaugural season of race telecasts. As a result, FX covered several races in the series then known as the Busch Series and Winston Cup ( including the All-Star Race ), as well as select qualifying and final practice sessions. Having FX carry the race telecasts was intended to promote the channel and encourage NASCAR fans to contact their subscription providers to add FX to their lineup. In 2002, Peter Liguori, who was then president of FX, praised NASCAR for its growth ; the channel increased penetration from 58.5 million to 76.6 million households nationwide. [ 32 ] FX was removed from Fox’s NASCAR coverage in the 2007 season, which saw the Busch Series move exclusively to ESPN, and Fox aired all of Nextel Cup races on broadcast television .In 1997, FX obtained partial cable rights to Major League Baseball games ; the channel initially aired game telecasts on Monday nights, before moving them to Saturday nights in 1998. In 2000, FX began sharing the cable rights with then-sister network Fox Family Channel ( taking rights to the league’s Thursday evening games from Fox Sports Net ), with games being scheduled on an alternating basis with FX. Starting with the 2001 season, FX also obtained rights to games from the MLB Division Series, the only playoff round to which Fox did not hold television rights. Among the games televised on FX was Cal Ripken Jr. ‘ s final home game with the Baltimore Orioles in September 2001 .On April 27, 2011, FX began airing soccer games from the UEFA Champions League as part of the league’s overall television khuyến mãi with Fox Sports. In the fall of 2011, FX began broadcasting Big 12, Conference USA and Pac-12 college football games on Saturdays ( mainly primetime games, with some daytime games mixed in ), as part of Fox Sports ‘ broadcasting contracts with the three conferences. [ 33 ]With the August 2013 launches of national sports networks Fox Sports 1 and Fox Sports 2, FX no longer served as a regular cable outlet for Fox Sports, but it still occasionally aired sporting events in the sự kiện of overflow situations, such as the UFC 185 preliminary card, [ 34 ] and selected soccer matches. [ 35 ]On September 7, 2019, FX would air the preliminary card for UFC 242. The event was being held in Abu Dhabi, which created conflicts with Saturday afternoon college football games on ESPN and ESPN2 ; it marked the first ESPN-produced sporting sự kiện to air on FX since the Disney acquisition of the network. [ 36 ]On May 17, 2022, Disney announced that it had acquired the exclusive broadcast rights to the XFL beginning with its 2023 season, with games airing on FX, ESPN, and ABC ; [ 37 ] FX has been included in the package to accommodate ESPN and ABC’s existing programming commitments. With its first XFL broadcast in February 2023, FX introduced an ” ESPN on FX ” brand for sports broadcasts carried by the channel, modelled after the existing ESPN on ABC branding. [ 38 ] [ 39 ] However due to low viewership, ESPN quietly discontinued the broadcasts on FX by early-March, and had rescheduled some of them to its own networks. [ 40 ]

High definition

FX began broadcasting a 720 p HD channel in 2007, which is available on the majority of pay television providers. The SD channel, as was standard with all of Fox’s broadcast and pay-TV networks ( and also its new Disney siblings, which also all operate in 720 p ), is now merely downscaled from the HD feed at the provider headend level rather than having a devoted SD feed .

Bon Jovi is an American rock band formed in 1983 in Sayreville, New Jersey. It consists of singer Jon Bon Jovi, keyboardist David Bryan, drummer Tico Torres, guitarist Phil X, and bassist Hugh McDonald.[1] Original bassist Alec John Such quit the band in 1994, and longtime guitarist and co-songwriter Richie Sambora left in 2013. The band has been credited with “bridging the gap between heavy metal and pop with style and ease”.[2]

In 1984 and 1985, Bon Jovi released their first two albums and their debut single “Runaway” managed to crack the Top 40. In 1986, the band achieved widespread success and global recognition with their third album, Slippery When Wet, which sold over 20 million copies and included three Top 10 singles, two of which reached No. 1 (“You Give Love a Bad Name” and “Livin’ on a Prayer”)[3] Their fourth album, New Jersey (1988), was also very successful, selling over 10 million copies and featuring five Top 10 singles (a record for a glam metal album), two of which reached No. 1 (“Bad Medicine” and “I’ll Be There for You”). After the band toured and recorded extensively during the late 1980s, culminating in the 1988–1990 New Jersey Tour, Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora released successful solo albums in 1990 and 1991, respectively.

In 1992, the band returned with the double-platinum Keep the Faith. This was followed by their biggest-selling and longest-charting single “Always” (1994) and the album These Days (1995), which proved to be a bigger success in Europe than in the United States, producing four Top Ten singles in the United Kingdom. Following a second hiatus, their 2000 album Crush, particularly the lead single, “It’s My Life”, successfully introduced the band to a younger audience, and the band considered this their comeback album. The band followed up with Bounce in 2002. The platinum albums Have a Nice Day (2005) and Lost Highway (2007) saw the band incorporate elements of country music into some of the songs, including the 2006 single “Who Says You Can’t Go Home”, which won the band a Grammy Award and became the first single by a rock band to reach No. 1 on the country charts. The Circle (2009) marked a return to the band’s rock sound. The band also enjoyed great success touring, with both the 2005–2006 Have a Nice Day Tour and 2007–2008 Lost Highway Tour ranking among the Top 20 highest-grossing concert tours of the 2000s. After recording and releasing Because We Can in 2013, lead guitarist Richie Sambora left the band just before an April concert during the supporting tour to spend more time with his family. The band released their first studio album without Sambora, Burning Bridges, in 2015 and the follow-up album This House Is Not For Sale in 2016, the tour for which encompassed 2017–2019. Their most recent album 2020 (2020) was re-worked to include songs inspired by the COVID-19 pandemic and George Floyd protests; its supporting tour was delayed to 2022.

Bon Jovi has released 15 studio albums, five compilations and three live albums. They have sold more than 120 million records worldwide, [ 4 ] making them one of the best-selling American rock bands, [ 5 ] [ 6 ] and performed more than 2,700 concerts in over 50 countries for more than 34 million fans. History

    Formation and ” Runaway ” ( 1980 – 1983 )

The Power Station where Jon Bon Jovi worked
Jon Bon Jovi began performing music live in 1975, at the age of 13, playing piano and guitar with his first band, Raze. [ 13 ] [ 14 ] At 16, Jon met David Bryan and formed a band called Atlantic City Expressway. [ 13 ] [ 15 ] Still in his teens, Bon Jovi played in the band John Bongiovi and the Wild Ones at clubs such as the Fast Lane and opening for local acts. [ 15 ] [ 16 ] By 1980, he had formed another band, the Rest, and opened up for New Jersey acts such as Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes. [ 15 ] [ 17 ] [ 18 ] Also in 1980, Jon recorded his first single, ” Runaway ” in his cousin’s studio, backed up by studio musicians. [ 15 ] The song was played by a local radio station on a compilation tape. [ 15 ]

By mid-1982, out of school and working part-time at a women’s shoe store, Jon Bon Jovi took a job at the Power Station Studios, a Manhattan recording facility where his cousin Tony Bongiovi was co-owner. Jon made several demos – including one produced by Billy Squier – and sent them to record companies, though failing to make an impact. His first professional recording was as lead vocals in “R2-D2 We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” which was part of the Christmas in the Stars album which his cousin co-produced.[17]

In 1983, Jon visited a local radio station WAPP 103.5 FM ” The Apple ” in Lake Success, Thành Phố New York, to write and sing the jingles for the station. He spoke with DJ Chip Hobart and to the promotion director, John Lassman, who suggested Jon let WAPP include the tuy nhiên ” Runaway ” on the station’s compilation album of local homegrown talent. Jon was reluctant, but eventually gave them the tuy nhiên, which he had re-recorded in 1982 ( following a rough early recording in 1981 ) with local studio musicians whom he designated The All Star Review – guitarist Tim Pierce, keyboardist Roy Bittan, drummer Frankie LaRocka, and bassist Hugh McDonald. [ 19 ]

The song began to get airplay in the New York area, then other sister stations in major markets picked up the song. In March 1983, Bon Jovi called David Bryan, who in turn called bassist Alec John Such and an experienced drummer named Tico Torres, both formerly of the band Phantom’s Opera. Tapped to play lead guitar for a short tour supporting “Runaway” was Bon Jovi’s friend and neighbor, Dave Sabo (“The Snake”), though he never officially joined the band.[20] He and Jon promised each other that whoever made it first, would help out the other. Sabo later went on to form the group Skid Row. Jon saw and was impressed with hometown guitarist Richie Sambora who was recommended by fellow bassist Alec John Such and drummer Tico Torres. Sambora had toured with Joe Cocker, played with a group called Mercy and had been called up to audition for Kiss. He also played on the album Lessons, originally intended for release in 1982[21] with the band Message for which Alec John Such was the bassist. Message was originally signed to Led Zeppelin’s Swan Song Records label, although the album was never officially released at the time.[17] Meanwhile, WAPP, the station that had first played “Runaway” worked with WOR-TV (now WWOR-TV) in nearby Secaucus, NJ on a music video show, Rock 9 Videos, for a short time in 1984.[22]

Tico Torres was also an experienced musician, having recorded and played live with Phantom’s Opera, The Marvelettes, and Chuck Berry. He appeared on 26 records and had recently recorded with Franke and the Knockouts, a Jersey band with hit singles during the early 1980 s .David Bryan had quit the band that he and Bon Jovi had founded in order to study medicine. While in college, he realized that he wanted to pursue music full-time, and was accepted to Juilliard School, a Thành Phố New York music school. When Bon Jovi called his friend and said that he was putting together a band, and a record khuyến mãi looked likely, Bryan followed Bon Jovi’s lead and gave up his studies .

Bon Jovi, 7800° Fahrenheit, Slippery When Wet and New Jersey (1984–1989)

Derek Shulman, who signed Bon Jovi to their first record deal

Once the band began playing showcases and opening for local talent, they caught the attention of record executive Derek Shulman, who signed them to Mercury Records and who was part of the PolyGram company. Because Jon Bon Jovi wanted a group name, Pamela Maher, a friend of Richard Fischer and an employee of Doc McGhee, suggested they call themselves Bon Jovi, following the example of the other famous two-word bands such as Van Halen. This name was chosen instead of the original idea of Johnny Electric. Pamela’s suggestion of the name was met with little enthusiasm, but two years later they hit the charts under that name.[citation needed]

With the help of their new manager Doc McGhee they recorded the band’s debut album, Bon Jovi, which was released on January 21, 1984. The album included the band’s first hit single, “Runaway”, reaching the top forty on the Billboard Hot 100. The album peaked at number forty-three on the Billboard 200 album chart. The group soon found itself opening for Scorpions in U.S. and for Kiss in Europe.[citation needed]

In 1985, Bon Jovi’s second album, 7800° Fahrenheit, was released. The band released three singles: “Only Lonely”, “In and Out of Love” and the ballad “Silent Night”.[23] The album peaked at number thirty-seven on the Billboard 200 and was certified Gold by RIAA.[17] While the album did not sell as well as the band had hoped, it allowed Bon Jovi to get out on the road touring again. In May 1985, Bon Jovi headlined venues in Japan and Europe. At the end of the European tour, the band began a six-month run of U.S. tour dates supporting Ratt. In the midst of that tour, they appeared at the Texas Jam and Castle Donington’s Monsters of Rock concerts in England. The band also performed at the first Farm Aid in 1985.[24]

After two moderately successful albums, the group changed its approach and hired professional songwriter Desmond Child as a collaborator. Bruce Fairbairn was chosen to produce and, in early 1986, Bon Jovi moved to Vancouver, Canada to spend six months recording a third album. They named it Slippery When Wet after visiting a strip club in Vancouver.[25] On August 16, 1986, Slippery When Wet was released and it spent eight weeks atop the Billboard 200.[26][27] The first two singles from the album, “You Give Love a Bad Name” and “Livin’ on a Prayer”, both hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100.[28] Slippery When Wet was named 1987’s top-selling album by Billboard,[29] and “Livin’ On A Prayer” won an MTV Video Music Award for Best Stage Performance.[30] The band won an award for Favorite Pop/Rock Band at the American Music Awards[31] and an award for Favorite Rock Group at the People’s Choice Awards.[32] When Slippery When Wet was released in August 1986, Bon Jovi was the support act for 38 Special. By the end of 1986, Bon Jovi were well into six months of headline dates in arenas across America. In August 1987, they headlined England’s Monsters of Rock festival. During their set, Dee Snider, Bruce Dickinson and Paul Stanley guested to perform “We’re an American Band”. The band ended the year having headlined 130 shows in the “Tour Without End”, grossing $28,400,000. Asked what this breakthrough to worldwide fame meant, Jon Bon Jovi said, “Everything is bigger, and it moves twice as fast. You’re recognized twice as often. This is bigger, the whole world gets bigger. You have to sell more records, be huger. You get smarter and you understand the business a little more, so it’s more responsibility. You understand it now, and you want to make sure everything goes right”.[citation needed]

Determined to prove that the success of Slippery When Wet was not a fluke, Bon Jovi released their fourth effort, New Jersey, in September 1988 which peaked at number one in the U.S., Canada, UK, Ireland, New Zealand and Australia. The album produced five Top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, giving Bon Jovi the record for the most Top 10 singles spawned by a hard rock album.[33] Two of the hits, “Bad Medicine” and “I’ll Be There for You”, reached number one.[34] The album’s three other singles, “Born to Be My Baby”, “Lay Your Hands on Me”, and “Living in Sin”, reached the top ten. Bon Jovi made the news when the video for “Living In Sin” was banned by MTV for sexual content; after the video was re-edited, MTV put it in heavy rotation.[17] Bon Jovi mounted another huge worldwide tour that continued throughout 1989 and 1990. They visited more than 22 countries and performed more than 232 shows. On June 11, 1989, the band performed a homecoming concert at Giants Stadium in New Jersey; the venue was sold out. In August 1989, the band headed to the Soviet Union for the Moscow Music Peace Festival. Bon Jovi were the first band officially sanctioned by the Soviet government to perform in the Soviet Union, and New Jersey became the first U.S. album released legally in the USSR[35]

The exhaustion of recording Slippery When Wet and New Jersey back to back and going on highly paced world tours took its toll. By the end of the New Jersey tour, the band had 16 months of concerts under its belt. The bandmates were exhausted physically, mentally and emotionally. Following the final tour date in Mexico, and without any clear plans for their future, the members of the band simply went home.[36] The band has since stated that there were few if any goodbyes between them. During the time they took off from the scene, members of the band retreated to their own projects and showed no desire to make another album.[17]

Keep the Faith, Cross Road and These Days (1992–1996)

Disillusioned with the music business and unhappy with the status quo, Jon Bon Jovi fired his management, business advisers, and agents (including long-time manager Doc McGhee) in 1991. Jon took on the management responsibilities himself by closing ranks and creating Bon Jovi Management. In October 1991, the band went to a Caribbean island of St. Thomas to discuss plans for the future. They managed to resolve their differences by allowing each member to speak about his feelings without interruption from each other.[citation needed] Upon resolving their issues, they headed back into the Vancouver Little Mountain studios with Bob Rock to work on the band’s fifth album in January 1992.

Bon Jovi’s fifth studio album Keep the Faith was released in November 1992, representing “the beginning of a new chapter in the history of Bon Jovi” and marking a change in the band’s sound and image. The album turned away from heavy drums and wild guitar solos, but instead introduced a more mature sound of Bon Jovi and contained more serious lyrics. The media focused considerable attention on Jon Bon Jovi’s hair. When Jon Bon Jovi cut his hair he made headlines on CNN.[37] To promote Keep The Faith they returned to their roots playing a few dates at the small New Jersey clubs where they had started their career. The band appeared on MTV Unplugged but that was different from the other episodes of MTV Unplugged series. The performance captures Bon Jovi in an intimate, “in the round” experience, performing acoustic and electric renditions of classic hits (Bon Jovi and non-Bon Jovi tracks) and new material from Keep the Faith. The concert was released commercially in 1993 as Keep the Faith: An Evening with Bon Jovi.
The album managed to reach Double Platinum status by the RIAA [38] and produced the Top 10 hit “Bed of Roses” while the title track hit number one on the Mainstream Rock Tracks.[28] Bon Jovi embarked on an extensive international world tour for the album, visiting countries the band had never seen before and headlining stadiums in South America, Europe, Asia and Australia. They visited 37 countries, performed 177 shows and seen them play to 2.5 million fans on the Keep the Faith Tour/I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead Tour.

In October 1994, Bon Jovi released a greatest hits album titled Cross Road, with two new tracks: “Always” and “Someday I’ll Be Saturday Night”. The first single from the album “Always” became Bon Jovi’s highest selling single and stayed on top ten of the Billboard Hot 100 for six months. In the UK, Cross Road became the bestselling album of 1994. That year Bon Jovi won an award for Best Selling Rock Band at the World Music Awards.[39]

That same year, bassist Alec John Such left the band, the first lineup change since Bon Jovi began. Hugh McDonald who was the bassist on ” Runaway “, unofficially replaced Such as bassist. Jon Bon Jovi said, regarding the departure of Such : ” Of course it hurts. But I learned to accept and respect it. The fact that I’m a workaholic, studio in, studio out, stage on, stage off, want to be dealing with music day and night, doesn’t mean everyone else has to adjust to that pace. Alec wanted to quit for a while now, so it didn’t come as a complete surprise. ” [ 40 ]

Bon Jovi’s sixth studio album, These Days, was released in June 1995, during which time the band was on European tour. The album debuted at number one in UK and spent four consecutive weeks at the top position. The album also reached number one in Ireland, Germany, Australia, Japan and many other countries. The album’s first single was the rhythm and blues influenced ballad “This Ain’t a Love Song”. With an exotic video filmed in Thailand, “This Ain’t a Love Song” reached top twenty on the Billboard Hot 100, and was the only significant U.S. hit from the album, however, the album produced four UK top ten hits (“This Aint A Love Song”, “Something for the Pain”, “Lie to Me” and “These Days”). That year the band earned a BRIT Award for best international band and also won a MTV Europe Music Award for Best Rock. It was followed by These Days Tour. In June 1995, Bon Jovi sold out three-nights at London’s historical Wembley Stadium. The concerts were documented for Bon Jovi: Live From London. Bon Jovi visited 43 countries and performed 126 shows on These Days Tour.

Following the overwhelming success of the These Days Tour, the members of Bon Jovi went their separate ways. But unlike the period following the New Jersey tour, tainted with uncertainty, this hiatus was a conscious group decision. The members of Bon Jovi agreed to a self-imposed two-year sabbatical from the band.

Crush, Bounce and This Left Feels Right (1999–2003)

Bon Jovi reunited in 1999 to record the song “Real Life” for the movie EdTV. David Bryan was recovering from an accident in which he nearly severed his finger.

After a nearly four-year hiatus, during which several band members worked on independent projects, Bon Jovi regrouped to begin work on their next studio album. In June 2000, Crush was released as the band’s seventh studio album and constituted something of a comeback. The first single “It’s My Life” was noted as one of the group’s most successful releases in a decade and most importantly, becoming a symbol of the band’s longevity as they prevailed through many different changes in the mainstream rock scene with admirable success. “It’s My Life” helped introduce them to a new, younger fan base. The band received two Grammy nominations for Best Rock Album Crush and Best Rock Performance by Duo/Group “It’s My Life”. The video for “It’s My Life” won the My VH1 Music Awards for “My Favorite Video”.

Bon Jovi played two sold-out concerts at London’s historic Wembley Stadium on August 19–20, 2000, becoming the last concerts held at the legendary venue before its demolition. That year the band played to 1.1 million fans in 40 arena and stadium venues across North America, Europe and Japan. While on tour, Bon Jovi released a collection of live performances from throughout their career in an album titled One Wild Night Live 1985–2001. This was Bon Jovi’s first-ever live album. The songs were culled from archives of recorded material the band had been collecting from their earliest days on the road right through the current tour. The band sold out two homecoming concerts at New Jersey’s Giants Stadium on July 27–28, 2001. The broadcast broke ratings records for the VH-1 network. At the end of the year Bon Jovi awarded for “Hottest Live Show” at the 2001 My VH1 Music Awards.

The members of the band had anticipated a brief vacation before work would begin on the band’s 8th studio album but on September 11 the world changed. Within days of the terrorist attacks, Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora had filmed Public Service Announcements for the Red Cross, recorded “America The Beautiful” for the NFL and performed as part of the historic America: A Tribute to Heroes live telethon. One month later, the band participated at two Monmouth County Alliance of Neighbors concerts in Red Bank, NJ to raise funds for the families close the band’s hometowns, which were affected by the World Trade Center disaster. And on October 21, 2001, Bon Jovi performed at the monumental Concert For New York at Madison Square Garden, raising relief funds and honoring those who worked to save lives during the attack.

In spring 2002, the group entered the studio to begin recording their eighth studio album. Bounce was influenced by the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, released on October 8, 2002. The album debuted at number two in both the U.S. and UK, but was the first album to sell less than 6 million units since their 1985 record 7800° Fahrenheit. The band went on the Bounce Tour for the album, during which they made history as the last band to play at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia before it was torn down.

Following the end of the Bounce Tour in August 2003, Bon Jovi embarked on a side project; originally intending to produce an album consisting of live acoustic performances, the band ended up rewriting, re-recording and reinventing 12 of their biggest hits in a new and much different light. Bon Jovi’s compilation album This Left Feels Right was released in November 2003.

The following year, the band released a box set titled 100,000,000 Bon Jovi Fans Can’t Be Wrong, the title being a homage to Elvis Presley’s 50,000,000 Elvis Fans Can’t Be Wrong. The set consisted of four CDs packed with 38 unreleased and 12 rare tracks, as well as a DVD. The box set marked the sales of 100 million Bon Jovi albums and also commemorated the 20th anniversary of the release of the band’s first record in 1984. In November 2004, Bon Jovi was honored with the Award for Merit at the American Music Awards.

Have a Nice Day and Lost Highway (2005–2008)

The band’s ninth studio album, Have a Nice Day, was released in September 2005. The album debuted at number two in both the U.S. and UK, reaching number one in fifteen countries.[41] The title track was an international hit, reaching the top ten in the UK, Europe, Australia and Canada. The second single, “Who Says You Can’t Go Home”, was released in early 2006. The song reached top forty on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S. A duet version of “Who Says You Can’t Go Home” with country singer Jennifer Nettles of the band Sugarland, peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot Country Songs and Bon Jovi became the first rock band to have a number one single on Billboard’s Country Chart. On February 11, 2007, Bon Jovi and Jennifer Nettles won the Grammy Award, for “Best Country Collaboration with Vocals” for “Who Says You Can’t Go Home”. The band also won an award for Favorite Rock Song at the People’s Choice Awards with “Who Says You Can’t Go Home”.[42]

Soon after the release of Have A Nice Day, the band started gearing up for the new 2005–2006 worldwide Have A Nice Day Tour. This tour, took the band to numerous stages and stadiums throughout the world. The tour was a significant commercial success, as the group played to 2,002,000 fans, and the tour grossed a total $191 million. The tour was the third-highest-grossing tour of 2006 taking in just over $131 million, just behind The Rolling Stones’ A Bigger Bang World Tour and Madonna’s Confessions Tour. On November 14, 2006, Bon Jovi were inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame alongside James Brown and Led Zeppelin.

Bon Jovi in Montreal in 2007 during the Lost Highway Tour

In June 2007, Bon Jovi released their tenth studio album, Lost Highway. The album influences the band’s rock sound with that of country music following the success of a country version of the band’s 2006 single “Who Says You Can’t Go Home”. To promote the new album, Bon Jovi made several television appearances, including the 6th annual CMT Awards in Nashville, American Idol, and MTV Unplugged, as well as playing at the Live Earth concert at Giants Stadium.[43] They also performed ten promotional gigs in the U.S., Canada, the UK, and Japan. As part of the ‘tour’, Bon Jovi were the first group to perform at London’s new O2 Arena (formerly the Millennium Dome) when it opened to the public on June 24, 2007. The 23,000-seater stadium sold out within 30 minutes of tickets being released.[44]

The album, described by Jon Bon Jovi as a “Bon Jovi album influenced by Nashville”, topped the charts in U.S., Canada, Europe, and Japan. The album’s third single “Till We Ain’t Strangers Anymore” features LeAnn Rimes and won the CMT Music Award for the Collaborative Video of the Year in 2008.[45][46] The song was also nominated for the Academy of Country Music Award for Vocal Event of the Year.[47]

U.S. state – Constituent political entity of the United States

A U.S. state is a constituent political entity of the United States of America. The United States is a federal union composed of 50 individual states, each with its own government and degree of autonomy. States are one of the primary divisions of the United States and have specific powers and responsibilities as defined by the U.S. Constitution.

Each state has its own government, including an executive branch led by a governor, a legislative branch responsible for making state laws, and a judicial branch to interpret and enforce those laws. States also have their own constitutions, which outline the structure of their government and the rights and responsibilities of their citizens.

States have authority over various aspects of governance within their borders, including education, law enforcement, transportation, healthcare, and more. However, they must also adhere to the federal laws and regulations established by the U.S. government.

The United States is often referred to as a “federal system” because it combines a strong federal government with individual state governments, and the division of powers between the two is defined by the U.S. Constitution. This federal system allows for a balance of power and the ability to address both national and local issues.

” American states ” redirects here. For the international organization, see Organization of American States

In the United States, a state is a constituent political entity, of which there are 50. Bound together in a political union, each state holds governmental jurisdiction over a separate and defined geographic territory where it shares its sovereignty with the federal government. Due to this shared sovereignty, Americans are citizens both of the federal republic and of the state in which they reside.[3] State citizenship and residency are flexible, and no government approval is required to move between states, except for persons restricted by certain types of court orders (such as paroled convicts and children of divorced spouses who share child custody).

Bạn đang đọc: U.S. state – Wikipedia

State governments in the U.S. are allocated power by the people ( of each respective state ) through their individual state constitutions. All are grounded in republican principles ( this being required by the federal constitution ), and each provides for a government, consisting of three branches, each with separate and independent powers : executive, legislative, and judicial. [ 4 ] States are divided into counties or county-equivalents, which may be assigned some local governmental authority but are not sovereign. County or county-equivalent structure varies widely by state, and states also create other local governments .States, unlike U.S. territories, possess many powers and rights under the United States Constitution. States and their citizens are represented in the United States Congress, a bicameral legislature consisting of the Senate and the House of Representatives. Each state is also entitled to select a number of electors ( equal to the total number of representatives and senators from that state ) to vote in the Electoral College, the body toàn thân that directly elects the president of the United States. Additionally, each state has the opportunity to ratify constitutional amendments, and, with the consent of Congress, two or more states may enter into interstate compacts with one another. The police power of each state is also recognized .Historically, the tasks of local law enforcement, public education, public health, intrastate commerce regulation, and local transportation and infrastructure, in addition to local, state, and federal elections, have generally been considered primarily state responsibilities, although all of these now have significant federal funding and regulation as well. Over time, the Constitution has been amended, and the interpretation and application of its provisions have changed. The general tendency has been toward centralization and incorporation, with the federal government playing a much larger role than it once did. There is a continuing debate over states ‘ rights, which concerns the extent and nature of the states ‘ powers and sovereignty in relation to the federal government and the rights of individuals .

The Constitution grants to Congress the authority to admit new states into the Union. Since the establishment of the United States in 1776 by the Thirteen Colonies, the number of states has expanded from the original 13 to 50. Each new state has been admitted on an equal footing with the existing states.[5] While the Constitution does not explicitly discuss the issue of whether states have the power to secede from the Union, shortly after the Civil War, the U.S. Supreme Court, in Texas v. White, held that a state cannot unilaterally do so.[6][7]

List

The 50 U.S. states, in alphabetical order, along with each state’s flag :

Background

The 13 original states came into existence in July 1776 during the American Revolutionary War ( 1775 – 1783 ), as the successors of the Thirteen Colonies, upon agreeing to the Lee Resolution [ 8 ] and signing the United States Declaration of Independence. [ 9 ] Prior to these events each state had been a British colony ; [ 8 ] each then joined the first Union of states between 1777 and 1781, upon ratifying the Articles of Confederation, the first U.S. constitution. [ 10 ] [ 11 ] Also during this period, the newly independent states developed their own individual state constitutions, among the earliest written constitutions in the world. [ 12 ] Although different in detail, these state constitutions shared features that would be important in the American constitutional order : they were republican in form, and separated power among three branches, most had bicameral legislatures, and contained statements of, or a bill of rights. [ 13 ] Later, from 1787 to 1790, each of the states also ratified a new federal frame of government in the Constitution of the United States. [ 14 ] In relation to the states, the U.S. Constitution elaborated concepts of federalism. [ 15 ]

Governments

Under U.S. constitutional law, the 50 individual states and the United States as a whole are each sovereign jurisdictions.[16] The states are not administrative divisions of the country; the Tenth Amendment to the United States Constitution reserves to the states or to the people all powers of government not delegated to the federal government.

Consequently, each of the 50 states reserves the right to organize its individual government in any way ( within the broad parameters set by the U.S. Constitution and the Republican Guarantee enforced by Congress ) deemed appropriate by its people, and to exercise all powers of government not delegated to the federal government by the Constitution. [ 17 ] A state, unlike the federal government, has un-enumerated police power, that is, the right to generally make all necessary laws for the welfare of its people. [ 18 ] As a result, while the governments of the various states share many similar features, they often vary greatly with regard to form and substance. No two state governments are identical .

Constitutions

The government of each state is structured in accordance with its individual constitution. Many of these documents are more detailed and more elaborate than their federal counterpart. The Constitution of Alabama, for example, contains 310,296 words – more than 40 times as many as the U.S. Constitution. [ 19 ] In practice, each state has adopted a three-branch frame of government : executive, legislative, and judicial ( even though doing so has never been required ). [ 19 ] [ 20 ]

Early on in American history, four state governments differentiated themselves from the others in their first constitutions by choosing to self-identify as Commonwealths rather than as states: Virginia, in 1776;[21] Pennsylvania, in 1777; Massachusetts, in 1780; and Kentucky, in 1792. Consequently, while these four are states like the other states, each is formally a commonwealth because the term is contained in its constitution.[22] The term, commonwealth, which refers to a state in which the supreme power is vested in the people, was first used in Virginia during the Interregnum, the 1649–60 period between the reigns of Charles I and Charles II during which parliament’s Oliver Cromwell as Lord Protector established a republican government known as the Commonwealth of England. Virginia became a royal colony again in 1660, and the word was dropped from the full title; it went unused until reintroduced in 1776.[21]

Executive

In each state, the chief executive is called the governor, who serves as both head of state and head of government. All governors are chosen by direct election. The governor may approve or veto bills passed by the state legislature, as well as recommend and work for the passage of bills, usually supported by their political party. In 44 states, governors have line item veto power. [ 23 ] Most states have a plural executive, meaning that the governor is not the only government official in the state responsible for its executive branch. In these states, executive power is distributed amongst other officials, [ 24 ] elected by the people independently of the governor — such as the lieutenant governor, attorney general, comptroller, secretary of state, and others .Elections of officials in the United States are generally for a fixed term of office. The constitutions of 19 states allow for citizens to remove and replace an elected public official before the end of their term of office through a recall election. [ 25 ] Each state follows its own procedures for recall elections, and sets its own restrictions on how often, and how soon after a general election, they may be held. In all states, the legislatures can remove state executive branch officials, including governors, who have committed serious abuses of their power from office. The process of doing so includes impeachment ( the bringing of specific charges ), and a trial, in which legislators act as a jury. [ 25 ]

Legislative

The primary responsibilities of state legislatures are to enact state laws and appropriate money for the administration of public policy. [ 23 ] In all states, if the governor vetoes a bill ( or a portion of one ), it can still become law if the legislature overrides the veto ( repasses the bill ), which in most states requires a two-thirds vote in each chamber. [ 23 ] In 49 of the 50 states the legislature consists of two chambers : a lower house ( variously called the House of Representatives, State Assembly, General Assembly or House of Delegates ) and a smaller upper house, in all states called the Senate. The exception is the unicameral Nebraska Legislature, which has only a single chamber. [ 26 ] Most states have a part-time legislature ( traditionally called a citizen legislature ). Ten state legislatures are considered full-time ; these bodies are more similar to the U.S. Congress than are the others. [ 27 ]

Members of each state’s legislature are chosen by direct election. In Baker v. Carr (1962) and Reynolds v. Sims (1964), the U.S. Supreme Court held that all states are required to elect their legislatures in such a way as to afford each citizen the same degree of representation (the one person, one vote standard). In practice, most states elect legislators from single-member districts, each of which has approximately the same population. Some states, such as Maryland and Vermont, divide the state into single- and multi-member districts. In this case, multi-member districts must have proportionately larger populations, e.g., a district electing two representatives must have approximately twice the population of a district electing just one. The voting systems used across the nation are: first-past-the-post in single-member districts, and multiple non-transferable vote in multi-member districts.

In 2013, there were a total of 7,383 legislators in the 50 state legislative bodies. They earned from USD 0 annually ( New Mexico ) to $ 90,526 ( California ). There were various per diem and mileage compensation. [ 28 ]

Judicial

States can also organize their judicial systems differently from the federal judiciary, as long as they protect the federal constitutional right of their citizens to procedural due process. Most have a trial-level court, generally called a district court, superior court or circuit court, a first-level appellate court, generally called a court of appeal ( or appeals ), and a supreme court. Oklahoma and Texas have separate highest courts for criminal appeals. Uniquely, in Thành Phố New York State, the trial court is called the Supreme Court ; appeals go up first to the Supreme Court’s Appellate Division, and from there to the Court of Appeals .State court systems exercise broad, plenary, and general jurisdiction, in contrast to the federal courts, which are courts of limited jurisdiction. The overwhelming majority of criminal and civil cases in the United States are heard in state courts. Each year, roughly 30 million new cases are filed in state courts and the total number of judges across all state courts is about 30,000 — for comparison, 1 million new cases are filed each year in federal courts, which have about 1,700 judges. [ 29 ]Most states base their legal system on English common law ( with substantial indigenous changes and incorporation of certain civil law innovations ), with the notable exception of Louisiana, a former French colony, which draws large parts of its legal system from French civil law .Only a few states choose to have the judges on the state’s courts serve for life terms. In most states, the judges, including the justices of the highest court in the state, are either elected or appointed for terms of a limited number of years and are usually eligible for re-election or reappointment .

Unitarism

All states are unitary states, not federations or aggregates of local governments. Local governments within them are created by and exist by virtue of state law, and local governments within each state are subject to the central authority of that particular state. State governments commonly delegate some authority to local units and channel policy decisions down to them for implementation. [ 30 ] In a few states, local units of government are permitted a degree of home rule over various matters. The prevailing legal theory of state preeminence over local governments, referred to as Dillon’s Rule, holds that ,

A municipal corporation possesses and can exercise the following powers and no others : First, those granted in express words ; second, those necessarily implied or necessarily incident to the powers expressly granted ; third, those absolutely essential to the declared objects and purposes of the corporation — not simply convenient but indispensable ; fourth, any fair doubt as to the existence of power is resolved by the courts against the corporation — against the existence of the powers. [ 31 ]

Each state defines for itself what powers it will allow local governments. Generally, four categories of power may be given to local jurisdictions :

  • Structural – power to choose the form of government, charter and enact charter revisions,
  • Functional – power to exercise local self-government in a broad or limited manner,
  • Fiscal – authority to determine revenue sources, set tax rates, borrow funds and other related financial activities,
  • Personnel – authority to set employment rules, remuneration rates, employment conditions and collective bargaining.[32]

Relationships

Interstate

Each state admitted to the Union by Congress since 1789 has entered it on an equal footing with the original states in all respects.[33] With the growth of states’ rights advocacy during the antebellum period, the Supreme Court asserted, in Lessee of Pollard v. Hagan (1845), that the Constitution mandated admission of new states on the basis of equality.[34] With the consent of Congress, states may enter into interstate compacts, agreements between two or more states. Compacts are frequently used to manage a shared resource, such as transportation infrastructure or water rights.[35]

Under Article IV of the Constitution, which outlines the relationship between the states, each state is required to give full faith and credit to the acts of each other’s legislatures and courts, which is generally held to include the recognition of most contracts and criminal judgments, and before 1865, slavery status. Under the Extradition Clause, a state must extradite people located there who have fled charges of ” treason, felony, or other crimes ” in another state if the other state so demands. The principle of hot pursuit of a presumed felon and arrest by the law officers of one state in another state are often permitted by a state. [ 36 ]The full faith and credit expectation does have exceptions, some legal arrangements, such as professional licensure and marriages, may be state-specific, and until recently states have not been found by the courts to be required to honor such arrangements from other states. [ 37 ] Such legal acts are nevertheless often recognized state-to-state according to the common practice of comity. States are prohibited from discriminating against citizens of other states with respect to their basic rights, under the Privileges and Immunities Clause .

With the federal government

Under Article IV, each state is guaranteed a form of government that is grounded in republican principles, such as the consent of the governed. [ 38 ] This guarantee has long been at the forefront of the debate about the rights of citizens vis-à-vis the government. States are also guaranteed protection from invasion, and, upon the application of the state legislature ( or executive, if the legislature cannot be convened ), from domestic violence. This provision was discussed during the 1967 Detroit riot but was not invoked .
Ownership of federal lands in the 50 states
The Supremacy Clause ( Article VI, Clause 2 ) establishes that the Constitution, federal laws made pursuant to it, and treaties made under its authority, constitute the supreme law of the land. [ 39 ] It provides that state courts are bound by the supreme law ; in case of conflict between federal and state law, the federal law must be applied. Even state constitutions are subordinate to federal law. [ 40 ]States ‘ rights are understood mainly with reference to the Tenth Amendment. The Constitution delegates some powers to the national government, and it forbids some powers to the states. The Tenth Amendment reserves all other powers to the states, or to the people. Powers of the U.S. Congress are enumerated in Article I, Section 8, for example, the power to declare war. Making treaties is one power forbidden to the states, being listed among other such powers in Article I, Section 10 .

Among the Article I enumerated powers of Congress is the power to regulate commerce. Since the early 20th century, the Supreme Court’s interpretation of this “Commerce Clause” has, over time, greatly expanded the scope of federal power, at the expense of powers formerly considered purely states’ matters. The Cambridge Economic History of the United States says, “On the whole, especially after the mid-1880s, the Court construed the Commerce Clause in favor of increased federal power.”[41] In 1941, the Supreme Court in U.S. v. Darby upheld the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938, holding that Congress had the power under the Commerce Clause to regulate employment conditions.[42] Then, one year later, in Wickard v. Filburn, the Court expanded federal power to regulate the economy by holding that federal authority under the commerce clause extends to activities which may appear to be local in nature but in reality effect the entire national economy and are therefore of national concern.[43] For example, Congress can regulate railway traffic across state lines, but it may also regulate rail traffic solely within a state, based on the reality that intrastate traffic still affects interstate commerce. Through such decisions, argues law professor David F. Forte, “the Court turned the commerce power into the equivalent of a general regulatory power and undid the Framers’ original structure of limited and delegated powers.” Subsequently, Congress invoked the Commerce Clause to expand federal criminal legislation, as well as for social reforms such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Only within the past couple of decades, through decisions in cases such as those in U.S. v. Lopez (1995) and U.S. v. Morrison (2000), has the Court tried to limit the Commerce Clause power of Congress.[44]

Another enumerated congressional power is its taxing and spending power.[45] An example of this is the system of federal aid for highways, which include the Interstate Highway System. The system is mandated and largely funded by the federal government and serves the interests of the states. By threatening to withhold federal highway funds, Congress has been able to pressure state legislatures to pass various laws.[46] An example is the nationwide legal drinking age of 21, enacted by each state, brought about by the National Minimum Drinking Age Act. Although some objected that this infringes on states’ rights, the Supreme Court upheld the practice as a permissible use of the Constitution’s Spending Clause in South Dakota v. Dole 483 U.S. 203 (1987).

As prescribed by Article I of the Constitution, which establishes the U.S. Congress, each state is represented in the Senate ( irrespective of population size ) by two senators, and each is guaranteed at least one representative in the House. Both senators and representatives are chosen in direct popular elections in the various states. ( Prior to 1913, senators were elected by state legislatures. ) There are presently 100 senators, who are elected at-large to staggered terms of six years, with one-third of them being chosen every two years. Representatives are elected at large or from single-member districts to terms of two years ( not staggered ). The size of the House — presently 435 voting members — is set by federal statute. Seats in the House are distributed among the states in proportion to the most recent constitutionally mandated decennial census. [ 47 ] The borders of these districts are established by the states individually through a process called redistricting, and within each state all districts are required to have approximately equal populations. [ 48 ]Citizens in each state plus those in the District of Columbia indirectly elect the president and vice president. When casting ballots in presidential elections they are voting for presidential electors, who then, using procedures provided in the 12 th amendment, elect the president and vice president. [ 49 ] There were 538 electors for the most recent presidential election in 2020 ; the allocation of electoral votes was based on the 2010 census. [ 50 ] Each state is entitled to a number of electors equal to the total number of representatives and senators from that state ; the District of Columbia is entitled to three electors. [ 51 ]While the Constitution does set parameters for the election of federal officials, state law, not federal, regulates most aspects of elections in the U.S., including primaries, the eligibility of voters ( beyond the basic constitutional definition ), the running of each state’s electoral college, as well as the running of state and local elections. All elections — federal, state, and local — are administered by the individual states, and some voting rules and procedures may differ among them. [ 52 ]Article V of the Constitution accords states a key role in the process of amending the U.S. Constitution. Amendments may be proposed either by Congress with a two-thirds vote in both the House and the Senate, or by a constitutional convention called for by two-thirds of the state legislatures. [ 53 ] To become part of the Constitution, an amendment must be ratified by either — as determined by Congress — the legislatures of three-quarters of the states or state ratifying conventions in three-quarters of the states. [ 54 ] The vote in each state ( to either ratify or reject a proposed amendment ) carries equal weight, regardless of a state’s population or length of time in the Union .

With other countries

U.S. states are not sovereign in the Westphalian sense in international law which says that each State has sovereignty over its territory and domestic affairs, to the exclusion of all external powers, on the principle of non-interference in another State’s domestic affairs, and that each State ( no matter how large or small ) is equal in international law. [ 55 ] Additionally, the 50 U.S. states do not possess international legal sovereignty, meaning that they are not recognized by other sovereign States such as, for example, France, Germany or the United Kingdom. [ 55 ] The federal government is responsible for international relations, but state and local government leaders do occasionally travel to other countries and form economic and cultural relationships .

Admission into the Union

The order in which the original 13 states ratified the Constitution, then the order in which the others were admitted to the Union
Article IV also grants to Congress the authority to admit new states into the Union. Since the establishment of the United States in 1776, the number of states has expanded from the original 13 to 50. Each new state has been admitted on an equal footing with the existing states. [ 34 ] Article IV also forbids the creation of new states from parts of existing states without the consent of both the affected states and Congress. This caveat was designed to give Eastern states that still had Western land claims ( including Georgia, North Carolina, and Virginia ), to have a veto over whether their western counties could become states, [ 33 ] and has served this same function since, whenever a proposal to partition an existing state or states in order that a region within might either join another state or to create a new state has come before Congress .Most of the states admitted to the Union after the original 13 were formed from an organized territory established and governed by Congress in accord with its plenary power under Article IV, Section 3, Clause 2. [ 56 ] The outline for this process was established by the Northwest Ordinance ( 1787 ), which predates the ratification of the Constitution. In some cases, an entire territory has become a state ; in others some part of a territory has .When the people of a territory make their desire for statehood known to the federal government, Congress may pass an enabling act authorizing the people of that territory to organize a constitutional convention to write a state constitution as a step toward admission to the Union. Each act details the mechanism by which the territory will be admitted as a state following ratification of their constitution and election of state officers. Although the use of an enabling act is a traditional historic practice, a number of territories have drafted constitutions for submission to Congress absent an enabling act and were subsequently admitted. Upon acceptance of that constitution and meeting any additional Congressional stipulations, Congress has always admitted that territory as a state .In addition to the original 13, six subsequent states were never an organized territory of the federal government, or part of one, before being admitted to the Union. Three were set off from an already existing state, two entered the Union after having been sovereign states, and one was established from unorganized territory :
Congress is under no obligation to admit states, even in those areas whose population expresses a desire for statehood. Such has been the case numerous times during the nation’s history. In one instance, Mormon pioneers in Salt Lake City sought to establish the state of Deseret in 1849. It existed for slightly over two years and was never approved by the United States Congress. In another, leaders of the Five Civilized Tribes ( Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, and Seminole ) in Indian Territory proposed to establish the state of Sequoyah in 1905, as a means to retain control of their lands. [ 64 ] The proposed constitution ultimately failed in the U.S. Congress. Instead, the Indian Territory and Oklahoma Territory were both incorporated into the new state of Oklahoma in 1907. The first instance occurred while the nation still operated under the Articles of Confederation. The State of Franklin existed for several years, not long after the end of the American Revolution, but was never recognized by the Confederation Congress, which ultimately recognized North Carolina ‘ s claim of sovereignty over the area. The territory comprising Franklin later became part of the Southwest Territory, and ultimately of the state of Tennessee .Additionally, the entry of several states into the Union was delayed due to distinctive complicating factors. Among them, Michigan Territory, which petitioned Congress for statehood in 1835, was not admitted to the Union until 1837, due to a boundary dispute with the adjoining state of Ohio. The Republic of Texas requested annexation to the United States in 1837, but fears about potential conflict with Mexico delayed the admission of Texas for nine years. [ 65 ] Statehood for Kansas Territory was held up for several years ( 1854 – 61 ) due to a series of internal violent conflicts involving anti-slavery and pro-slavery factions. West Virginia’s bid for statehood was also delayed over slavery and was settled when it agreed to adopt a gradual abolition plan. [ 66 ]

Proposed additions

Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico, an unincorporated U.S. territory, refers to itself as the ” Commonwealth of Puerto Rico ” in the English version of its constitution, and as ” Estado Libre Asociado ” ( literally, Associated Free State ) in the Spanish version. As with all U.S. territories, its residents do not have full representation in the United States Congress. Puerto Rico has limited representation in the U.S. House of Representatives in the form of a Resident Commissioner, a delegate with limited voting rights in the Committee of the Whole House on the State of the Union, but no voting rights otherwise. [ 67 ]A non-binding referendum on statehood, independence, or a new option for an associated territory ( different from the current status ) was held on November 6, 2012. Sixty one percent ( 61 % ) of voters chose the statehood option, while one third of the ballots were submitted blank. [ 68 ] [ 69 ]On December 11, 2012, the Legislative Assembly of Puerto Rico enacted a concurrent resolution requesting the President and the Congress of the United States to respond to the referendum of the people of Puerto Rico, held on November 6, 2012, to end its current form of territorial status and to begin the process to admit Puerto Rico as a state. [ 70 ]Another status referendum was held on June 11, 2017, in which 97 % percent of voters chose statehood. Turnout was low, as only 23 % of voters went to the polls, with advocates of both continued territorial status and independence urging voters to boycott it. [ 71 ]On June 27, 2018, the H.R. 6246 Act was introduced on the U.S. House with the purpose of responding to, and comply with, the democratic will of the United States citizens residing in Puerto Rico as expressed in the plebiscites held on November 6, 2012, and June 11, 2017, by setting forth the terms for the admission of the territory of Puerto Rico as a state of the Union. [ 72 ] The act has 37 original cosponsors between Republicans and Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives. [ 73 ]On November 3, 2020, Puerto Rico held another referendum. In the non-binding referendum, Puerto Ricans voted in favor of becoming a state. They also voted for a pro-statehood governor, Pedro Pierluisi. [ 74 ]

Washington, D.C.

The intention of the Founding Fathers was that the United States capital should be at a neutral site, not giving favor to any existing state ; as a result, the District of Columbia was created in 1800 to serve as the seat of government. As it is not a state, the district does not have representation in the Senate and has a non-voting delegate in the House ; neither does it have a sovereign elected government. Additionally, before ratification of the 23 rd Amendment in 1961, district citizens did not get the right to vote in presidential elections .The strong majority of residents of the District tư vấn statehood of some form for that jurisdiction – either statehood for the whole district or for the inhabited part, with the remainder remaining under federal jurisdiction. In November năm nay, Washington, D.C. residents voted in a statehood referendum in which 86 % of voters supported statehood for Washington, D.C. [ 75 ] For statehood to be achieved, it must be approved by Congress. [ 76 ]

Secession from the Union

The Constitution speaks of ” union ” several times, but does not explicitly discuss the issue of whether a state can secede from the Union. Its predecessor, the Articles of Confederation, stated that the union of the United States ” shall be perpetual. ” The question of whether or not individual states held the unilateral right to secession was a passionately debated feature of the nations ‘ political discourse from early in its history and remained a difficult and divisive topic until the American Civil War. In 1860 and 1861, 11 southern states each declared secession from the United States and joined to form the Confederate States of America ( CSA ). Following the defeat of Confederate forces by Union armies in 1865, those states were brought back into the Union during the ensuing Reconstruction era. The federal government never recognized the sovereignty of the CSA, nor the validity of the ordinances of secession adopted by the seceding states. [ 6 ] [ 77 ]

Following the war, the United States Supreme Court, in Texas v. White (1869), held that states did not have the right to secede and that any act of secession was legally void. Drawing on the “perpetual” union language of the Articles of Confederation, and its succeeding Preamble to the Constitution, which states that the Constitution intends to “form a more perfect union”, and speaks of the people of the United States a single body politic who are the authors of the more perfect union (“We the people”), the Supreme Court found that states did not have a right to secede. The court’s reference in the same decision to the possibility of such changes occurring “through revolution, or through consent of the States”, essentially means that this decision holds that no state has a right to unilaterally decide to leave the Union.[6][77]

Name origins

A map showing the source languages of state names
The 50 states have taken their names from a wide variety of languages. Twenty-four state names originate from Native American languages. Of these, eight are from Algonquian languages, seven are from Siouan languages, three are from Iroquoian languages, one is from Uto-Aztecan languages and five others are from other indigenous languages. Hawaii ‘ s name is derived from the Polynesian Hawaiian language .Of the remaining names, 22 are from European languages. Seven are from Latin ( mainly Latinized forms of English names ) and the rest are from English, Spanish and French. Eleven states are named after individual people, including seven named for royalty and one named after a President of the United States. The origins of six state names are unknown or disputed. Several of the states that derive their names from names used for Native peoples have retained the plural ending of ” s ” .

Geography

Borders

The borders of the 13 original states were largely determined by colonial charters. Their western boundaries were subsequently modified as the states ceded their western land claims to the Federal government during the 1780 s and 1790 s. Many state borders beyond those of the original 13 were set by Congress as it created territories, divided them, and over time, created states within them. Territorial and new state lines often followed various geographic features ( such as rivers or mountain range peaks ), and were influenced by settlement or transportation patterns. At various times, national borders with territories formerly controlled by other countries ( British North America, New France, New Spain including Spanish Florida, and Russian America ) became institutionalized as the borders of U.S. states. In the West, relatively arbitrary straight lines following latitude and longitude often prevail due to the sparseness of settlement west of the Mississippi River .Once established, most state borders have, with few exceptions, been generally stable. Only two states, Missouri ( Platte Purchase ) and Nevada grew appreciably after statehood. Several of the original states ceded land, over a several-year period, to the Federal government, which in turn became the Northwest Territory, Southwest Territory, and Mississippi Territory. In 1791, Maryland and Virginia ceded land to create the District of Columbia ( Virginia’s portion was returned in 1847 ). In 1850, Texas ceded a large swath of land to the federal government. Additionally, Massachusetts and Virginia ( on two occasions ), have lost land, in each instance to form a new state .

There have been numerous other minor adjustments to state boundaries over the years due to improved surveys, resolution of ambiguous or disputed boundary definitions, or minor mutually agreed boundary adjustments for administrative convenience or other purposes.[57] Occasionally, either Congress or the U.S. Supreme Court has had to settle state border disputes. One notable example is the case New Jersey v. New York, in which New Jersey won roughly 90% of Ellis Island from New York in 1998.[78]

Once a territory is admitted by Congress as a state of the Union, the state must consent to any changes pertaining to the jurisdiction of that state and Congress. [ 79 ] The only potential violation of this occurred when the legislature of Virginia declared the secession of Virginia from the United States at the start of the American Civil War and a newly formed alternative Virginia legislature, recognized by the federal government, consented to have West Virginia secede from Virginia .

Regional grouping

States may be grouped in regions ; there are many variations and possible groupings. Many are defined in law or regulations by the federal government. For example, the United States Census Bureau defines four statistical regions, with nine divisions. [ 80 ] The Census Bureau region definition ( Northeast, Midwest, South, and West ) is ” widely used … for data collection and analysis, ” [ 81 ] and is the most commonly used classification system. [ 82 ] [ 83 ] [ 84 ] Other multi-state regions are unofficial, and defined by geography or cultural affinity rather than by state lines .
