Access Industries, Inc. is an American privately held multinational industrial group.[1] It was founded in 1986 by businessman Leonard “Len” Blavatnik, who is also its chairman. Access’s industrial focus is in four areas: natural resources and chemicals, media and telecommunications,[1] venture capital[2] and real estate.[1] The group invests in the United States, Europe,[3] Israel,[4] and Latin America.[3] It is headquartered in New York, with additional offices in London and Moscow.[1]

Len Blavatnik founded Access Industries in 1986 as an investment company.[5] He attended Harvard Business School while running the company on the side,[3] graduating with an MBA in 1989. Among its early investments, Access Industries helped form the large aluminum producer SUAL in 1996, which later became part of UC RUSAL. In 1997, Access acquired a 40% stake in the Russian oil company TNK.[6] Half of TNK was sold to British Petroleum (BP) to form TNK-BP in 2003,[3] in what was the largest-ever foreign investment in a Russian company.[7] In 2013, Rosneft acquired TNK-BP for $55 billion,[8] with Access Industries selling its stake and Blavatnik collecting US$7 billion for his share of the oil venture.[6]

Access purchased a large stake in the fashion label Tory Burch in 2004. [ 9 ] In 2006, Access Industries took an estimated 70 % stake in Top Up TV, a pay TV service in the United Kingdom [ 10 ] which sold its subscriber business to Sky in 2013. [ 11 ] In 2007, Access Industries purchased a majority stake in the sports truyền thông company Perform Group. Natural resources and chemicals[edit]

Among Access Industries ‘ current holdings are businesses [ 1 ] in oil, [ 21 ] petrochemicals, [ 22 ] power generation, [ 23 ] aluminum [ 6 ] and biotechnology. [ 24 ] Access helped form the large aluminum producer SUAL 1996 with a combination of mergers and acquisitions. [ 6 ] In 2007, SUAL merged with RUSAL and the alumina business of Glencore International AG [ 25 ] to form UC RUSAL. [ 6 ] RUSAL raised USD 2.24 billion in a 2010 IPO on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, [ 26 ] and as of 2017, it was the world’s largest aluminum producer. [ 6 ]In 2005 Access acquired Basell Polyolefins, a Dutch company [ 22 ] specializing in polyolefins. [ 8 ] On December 20, 2007, Basell acquired the commodity chemicals company Lyondell [ 22 ] for approximately USD 20 billion. [ 8 ] [ 22 ] The resulting company, LyondellBasell Industries, [ 8 ] was impacted by the 2008 financial crisis, [ 8 ] [ 27 ] and in 2009, the US operations of LyondellBasell Industries filed for bankruptcy. [ 27 ] With financing in part from Access Industries, [ 6 ] [ 28 ] in 2010, [ 28 ] LyondellBasell emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in a significantly improved financial position. With a value of $ 15 billion, [ 8 ] it was subsequently ranked as the world’s third-largest chemical company based on net sales. [ 8 ] [ 27 ] Access Industries repurchased a large stake in the company in 2013. [ 8 ] As of 2017, Access owned approximately 18 % of LyondellBasell. [ 29 ]Since 2013, Access Industries has owned Clal Industries Ltd. ( CII ), an Israeli industrial investment group. [ 4 ] [ 24 ] Among CII’s main investments are Nesher Israel Cement Enterprises, Hadera Paper, Golf và Co., Clal Biotechnology, [ 24 ] and the logistics group Taavura. [ 30 ] Also since 2013, Access has owned a significant interest in EP Energy, a North American oil and natural gas producer with a portfolio of fields in the United States and Brazil. Media and telecommunications[edit]

Access Industries has a number of portfolio companies in the media and telecommunications industries.[1] Ice,[31] an internet and telecommunications company in Scandinavia,[32] is primarily owned by Access Industries.[33] In Israel, Access owns a third of RGE Group Ltd., a privately held media group[34] with assets including Channel 10,[4] Noga Communications and the Sports Channel.[34] Access Industries also owns a majority[35] stake in Amedia, a large Russian film and TV studio[36] known for shows such as Poor Nastya. Amedia earned exclusive rights to premiere HBO content in Russia in July 2017.[37]

Access invested in Warner Music Group (WMG) in 2004 with various co-investors.[38] After a partial sale of WMG was completed through an IPO on the NYSE in May 2005, Access continued as a significant shareholder[39] with a 2 percent stake prior to 2011.[40] Access acquired WMG[9] for US$3.3 billion,[16] including $320 million in cash and the assumption of $2 billion of WMG debt.[40]

Access Industries owns AI Film [ 9 ] [ 14 ] in London, a film finance and executive production company established in 2013.
